Osteopathy
Osteopathy is a holistic, hands-on approach to healthcare that focuses on the relationship between the body's structure and function. It is based on the principle that when the body is in balance, it can heal itself naturally. Osteopaths use a variety of techniques, including joint mobilisations, soft tissue work, manipulations and exercise prescription to improve movement, relieve tension, and restore overall function.
Unlike some treatments that focus solely on symptoms, osteopathy looks at the root cause of pain or discomfort, considering the muscles, joints, nerves, circulation, and internal health as interconnected systems. Whether you're dealing with chronic pain, recovering from an injury, or simply looking to improve your mobility and well-being, osteopathy can help.

Is osteopathy safe?
Osteopathy is a safe and effective form of treatment. In the UK, osteopaths must be registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) and undergo extensive training over 4 years in anatomy, physiology, pathology, and clinical practice. Treatment is non-invasive and tailored to each patient, ensuring a professional and evidence-informed approach.

What should I expect during an osteopathy appointment?
An initial osteopathy consultation typically includes:
-
A detailed case history, discussing symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle factors.
-
A physical examination, assessing posture, movement, and musculoskeletal function.
-
A personalised treatment plan, which may involve manual therapy, rehabilitation exercises, and lifestyle advice.
Osteopaths explain each step of the process, ensuring that patients feel informed and comfortable throughout their treatment.

What should I wear to my appointment?
To ensure a thorough examination and effective treatment, it may be helpful for the patient to be viewed in their underwear and/or a pair of shorts or leggings especially during the initial appointment. Please rest assured that we will always prioritise your comfort, respect your modesty, and adapt to your individual concerns and needs.
When should I arrive to my appointment?
It’s important that you arrive on time for your appointment, as we may have another booking immediately after yours. Please aim to arrive 5 minutes early. If you are more than 10 minutes late, your appointment may be cancelled, and you will be charged the full price. If you are running late, please notify us as soon as possible.

How many treatments will I need?
The number of sessions required depends on the nature of the condition, its severity, and individual response to treatment. Some patients experience significant improvement after one or two sessions, while others may require ongoing care. A treatment plan will be discussed during the initial consultation.

Does osteopathy hurt?
Osteopathic treatment is generally gentle and well-tolerated. Some individuals may experience mild soreness following treatment, similar to post-exercise discomfort, but this typically resolves within 24-48 hours. Osteopaths adjust their techniques according to the needs and comfort levels of each patient.

Will my medical insurance cover my cost of treatment?
As registered osteopaths we can provide you with a receipt if you self-pay that will be accepted by most insurers that cover osteopathy from a registered osteopath as part of your policy. We at Malaya Therapies are not connected to any insurance companies directly at this moment in time so claiming a course may not be possible. Please check with your provider for more information.

Do I need to consult my GP before my appointment?
Referral by a GP is not necessary, you are encouraged to keep your GP fully informed, so that your medical records are current and complete. This will ensure you receive the best possible care from both health professionals. With your permission, your osteopath may send a report to your GP with details of your condition and treatment. You can also request a letter for your employer if this is helpful.
Most patients 'self refer' to an osteopath for treatment.

What if I need to cancel or move my appointment?
We understand that sometimes things come up, and you may need to change your appointment. You can easily do this through our online system or by contacting us via email or phone. If you need to make changes, we kindly ask that you provide at least 24 hours' notice so we can offer the appointment to another patient in need. If unforeseen circumstances prevent you from attending, please let us know as soon as possible. While our policy is to charge the full fee for missed appointments or late cancellations, we do exercise discretion in certain situations. We truly appreciate your communication and will always do our best to accommodate your needs.
